ALUMINIUM

LIGHT, DURABLE, AND FUNCTIONAL. ALUMINIUM OFFERS A RARE COMBINATION OF VALUABLE PROPERTIES. IT IS ONE OF THE LIGHTEST METALS IN THE WORLD.

It’s almost three times lighter that iron but it’s also very strong, extremely flexible and corrosion resistant because its surface is always covered in an extremely thin yet very strong layer of oxide film.

In order to focus on performance and fuel efficiency, while reducing CO2 emissions, aluminium must be used. Every kilogram of aluminium used can reduce the overall weight of the vehicle by one kilogram. Hence, elite quality components are typically made from aluminium where possible: engine radiators, wheels, bumper infrastructures, suspension parts, engine cylinder blocks, transmission bodies, body parts, and even the chassis frame.

Example under the 2015 requirements a Formula 1™ race car must weigh at least 702 kilograms. Two thirds of this weight is aluminium. While the outer surface of the body is made from carbon fibre all the internal components and parts are made from aluminium alloys.
